What Certifications Do OT Security Engineers Need?

August 20, 2026

OT security certifications sit on a fairly defined ladder, and on what rung a candidate falls, usually maps to how much regulation, seniority and hands-on system access their role carries.

The entry point for OT security certifications is CompTIA Security+, a general cyber security baseline that most candidates already hold before they specialise. From there, the ladder splits into OT-specific credentials: CompTIA SecOT+, the ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Certificate Program, GIAC’s GICSP and GRID, IACRB’s CSSA, and eventually CISSP for candidates heading toward a CISO or Head of OT Security title.

Security+

Security+ isn’t OT-specific. It covers network security fundamentals, threat types and basic risk management, and most candidates who move into OT security hold it before they ever touch an industrial system. With an increase in regulatory pressure, many treat it as a baseline rather than a differentiator.

SecOT+

CompTIA’s OT-focused certification launches in December 2026. SecOT+ asks for three or more years of hands-on OT experience and two years implementing OT cyber security solutions, so it validates people already working in the field.

The exam (SOT-001) covers six domains: OT systems and safety foundations, risk management, threat intelligence, architecture, security operations and incident management. It’s likely to become a common requirement on job specs once it’s had a year or two to bed in, but it shouldn’t be marketed to candidates as a starting certification.

ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Certificate Program

This is really four certificates in one. Everyone starts with Fundamentals Specialist, then chooses Risk Assessment, Design or Maintenance Specialist in any order, or compresses all three into ISA’s five-day Fast Track course. Complete all four and ISA automatically designates the holder an IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Expert. This is the certification hiring managers tend to look for on architecture and consultancy briefs, where the job is designing or auditing a secure system rather than defending one day to day.

GICSP Certification

GICSP, run through GIAC, is the certification most associated with hands-on OT security work. It’s deliberately broad, aimed at IT practitioners, OT support staff, engineers and vendors as much as dedicated security analysts. The exam reflects that: 82 questions across three hours, using GIAC’s CyberLive format, where candidates work through realistic lab scenarios instead of straight multiple choice. It’s vendor-neutral and covers the full ICS security lifecycle, which is why it comes up so often on job specs for engineering and analyst roles.

GIAC GRID

GRID sits a step further along, built for people defending ICS networks rather than designing them. It’s aimed at incident response leads, OT SOC analysts, threat hunters and red teamers, and covers active defence, network monitoring, digital forensics and threat intelligence specific to industrial environments. Candidates coming from a GICSP background often move to GRID next if their role leans toward detection and response.

CSSA Certification

In OT, CSSA, the IACRB’s Certified SCADA Security Architect credential, is smaller and more niche than the others on this list, but it still surfaces regularly in job specs for architecture-heavy SCADA roles. It’s worth candidates knowing it exists even if it isn’t the first certification most people pursue.

CISSP Certification

CISSP isn’t OT-specific. It’s a broad, senior-level security management certification from ISC2, and it tends to appear on job specs for CISO or Head of OT Security roles where the successful candidate needs to run a security function, not just work within one. Pairing CISSP with an Expert-level IEC 62443 designation is a common combination for candidates aiming at that level.

Hiring impact of looking for the best OT security certifications

OT security certifications matter, but they don’t replace time on live systems. There’s no one path to success. It all depends on how the combination of qualifications and experience matches up to the day-to-day requirements for a specific OT security role.

If you’re building out an OT security team and want to know which are the best certifications for the OT security roles you’re hiring for, that’s exactly the kind of question Paradigm Tech is set up to answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best certification for OT security?

There isn’t a single best certification, it depends on the role. GICSP suits hands-on engineering and analyst work, IEC 62443 suits architecture and consultancy roles, and CISSP suits senior leadership positions.

Do I need Security+ before starting OT-specific certifications?

Not strictly, but most candidates hold it already. It provides the general cyber security grounding that OT-specific certifications build on.

When does CompTIA SecOT+ launch, and who is it for?

December 2026. It requires at least three years of hands-on OT experience, so it’s designed for practitioners rather than newcomers to the field.

Is GICSP or IEC 62443 more valuable?

They serve different purposes. GICSP is broader and more hands-on; IEC 62443 is more structured and suits architecture, risk assessment and design work specifically.
